Cute holiday photo cards, who knew?

Well it is that time of year again...holiday cards. And as if I had nothing better to do, I sit back every year and watch as my Christmas card list grows exponentially. So this year I decided I was going to find the cutest darn photo card, buy in bulk, and call it a day. But, did you know how ugly those cards can be? Yikes! So I consulted with my trusty friend, Mr. Internet (or I guess it can be a Mrs. since it is so efficient), and found some really cute designs. The site is called tinyprints.com, an affiliate of weddingpaperdivas.com, and they have some really cute cards, for every occasion actually. I haven't decided which design I like the best, but at least now I have some adequate choices. So even though I am taking the easy way out sending "lame" picture cards, which everyone seems to like by the way, at least I can punk out in style!

I loved this couple! Not only did they hire me (almost solely) based on the fact that my husband does the same triathlons Eric does, but they are just so much fun to be around. They were a blast to work with, even until 1:00 in the morning. Thank you Flora Europa, AZ Biltmore, Tri Rentals, BBJ Linen, SKM and Artisan Photography for such and amazing night!

As we embark on Fall again, I reminded that those 115 degree days are soon going to be forgotten, and the cool colors and breezes of Fall are right around the corner. I love orange, yellow, red, brown, tan, ivory, gold, bronze, anything in that color palette. And what a cool thing it was when Gina was right there with me. We did some pretty cool things mixing and matching anything in the color palette, anything with a real rustic edge. Since her father and grandfather, who are both passed, loved horses, Gina and Tim chose to have their reception at a local barn, and litter their beautiful wedding with lots of "country" details. The ambience was set, the colors dazzled and the music rocked! You really had no choice but than two step the night away!

Road Rage- WHY??

I am still fuming! Tonight as I drove home from watching my husband's band play their last run of their show before I see them again at the football game this Friday, I was happy. It is Labor Day, I am finally feeling better (since I had been sick all weekend) my husband had the day off to spend time with me, and then in turn I was able to support him by watching his kiddos at the end of practice. So as I drove home, I was happy and feeling like I had a pretty good day. That was until this truck, like the picture above, decided he had to ruin it! So here's the story...

I was driving (like I said earlier) and this truck (much too large to be safe on the road. But what do we Americans know about that? As long as it is bigger than my neighbors and get the chicks, who cares right?) pulls p behind me and starts flashing it brights. Now I went to U of A in Tucson, so I am familiar with freeway etiquette. If you are driving in the left hand lane, the "fast lane", and you are going to speed limit, you should pull to the right for slower cars. I got that. However, I was going over the speed limit and there was a car to the right of me. So I couldn't get over. While contemplating my dilemma I decided I would wait for the car to my right to pull far enough forward that I can get over and let this truck, who apparently has to get somewhere right now or else the world is coming to and end, go ahead of me. As I am thinking this through the truck pulls into the right hand land and pushes up on the car that is there. Then when it is right besides me, starts to run me off the road. I kid you not. AND it was pulling a freaking boat, so I had to get all the way into the median just so I wouldn't get hit. Oh, I was pissed!!

So, since I have been in two major accidents, both by drivers who were jerk offs and had no reason to be driving the way they were, I decide to follow this guy (or girl, I have no idea) just to make sure they had what they deserved coming to them. By the way, this is not recommended. No by me, the gal I spoke with at 911 emergency and the DPS guy I spoke with on the phone. But I didn't care. I wanted justice. I was seriously so caught off guard that someone would actually do something like that to another human being. What if I didn't notice he was obviously in a hurry and was oblivious to his bad choice. I would have been highway food. I drive a Camry for crying out loud. Not a F250 carrying a boat!

So long story short, I finally followed him long enough for the police to catch up and pull the truck over. They called me and said the police officer would call me back. So here I am waiting to nail this guy when the officer finally calls. Hopefully justice was done. If not, head this advice: It is never that important that you should endanger someone else's life. I know I drive borderline grandma sometimes, but hey, I am safe. And I do not have to live with the fact that I ruined someone's (maybe lots of people's lives) just because I was impatient and self-centered.

My Thoughts On Bridezilla (Warning: You may not want to hear them...)

So the other day I was driving (probably to Starbucks’s since I seem to be on a caffeine drip these days) and I saw a girl’s bummer sticker that said “Bridezilla on Board”. Immediately I thought, ‘When did being a Bridezilla become a thing to be proud of and why would someone want that title stuck permanently to their car?’ So, I got to thinking about Bridezillas for the next 20 minutes and I thought I would share my thoughts with you fine people.

First, I think we need to define what a Bridezilla is. I am sure this varies, but I really believe that Bridezillas are:
1. Unreasonable with their requests.
2. Unorganized, and blame everyone else when things falling apart.
3. Unfocused, not remembering the big picture or what really matters. 4. Unkind to those around them.
And 5. Well, just kind of unfortunate. It is a wedding day and they are a bride. Those are two of the most beautiful things out there. Hugs, kisses, love, white dress, veil, flowers, candles, music, oh it just makes me melt. Makes me smile. Makes me want to plan weddings for a living! Bridezilla. Well, that just makes me cringe. It is just not attractive at all and so not worth it. Why ruin something that you are putting so much time, money and heart in to? Believe me. What ever it is that is putting you over the edge, it won’t matter when it is all said and done!

As a wedding planner, people often say two things when they find out what I do for a living. Either, “That sounds like such a fun job.” Which, it is. Or, “Do you ever have any Bridezillas?” Luckily, I have amazing brides. I love them and we all get along great! In fact, I really believe that Bridezilla emerges when the bride has too much on her plate and just kind of snaps. When you have a wedding planner, that is minimized and Bridezilla stays at bay. So, what about the girls that take pride in being Bridezillas? (Like my friend on the freeway…) Well, if you saw it on TV (or whatever) and it looked appealing to you, then good luck! I am not sure anyone’s rants are going to change your mind. But, if you would rather enjoy your special day without turning into what society has claimed is more creature than human, either hire someone to help with that stress or just be aware of your actions. Be reasonable. Be organized. Be focused on the end goal. And most of all, be nice! Everyone will enjoy themselves so much more if Bridezilla does not arrive!

Side note: When I was looking for pictures for this blog entry I was in shock. Apparently there are a ton of brides that really do need a good massage, a walk in the park, or a good ol’ fashion chill pill. Let’s all just take one big collective breath, shall we?

Imoni Wins Third Place at NACE Competition

Well, a lot of you have been asking for pictures, and here they are! It always looks a little funny when you have other people's lighting and colors in the background, but hopefully you can get the idea. The element I was given was traditional. So I thought 'what can be more traditional than a tea party?' Being that my last name is Thye (pronounced Tea), I thought it was an even better idea. So I incorporated a lot of my favorite things. I love all things antique, lacey, and floral. I also invited members of my husband's family to sit at my Tea (Thye) Table. And even though my side of the family are not Thye's, I didn't want them to feel left out. So I used some of their pearls, antique perfume holders, broaches, hats, gloves and purses. Lastly, I made a garden of flowers in the back complete with iron crosses (in the shape of a "T".) So you can see a lot of me in this table. Thanks to Suzanne from Flora Europa for all her help (and the beautiful China!!) And thank you to Andrea from Artisan Photography and Jennifer from O Grace Photography for the awesome pictures. All in all, it was a fun event (despite my tired face at the end of the night). Enjoy!

Well here is one of the cutest couples you will ever meet. Not only are they a class act, but they were so much fun. And in the end were game for some very unexpected things! Can we say eighty year old grandma in a bandanna hip hopping on the dance floor, flower pinned doggies, and sunglasses for the grand entrance??? Ummmm, very cool actually. And the guests just ate it up! Thanks to Flore Europa for he amazing arrangements, One Fine Day for the pictures, SKM for the tunes, Villa Siena for the beautiful venue, and The Invitation Lady for the awesome escort tags and programs. You all rock!!

Table Tops Competition

Last summer NACE (the National Association of Catering Executives)started a table top and cake decorating competition. They called it the Event Elements Competition and it was super cool! Vendors from around the Valley all converged on the Pointe South Mountain (now Arizona Grand)to show brides, and others, there talents in table design and cake decor. Each vendor was given an element: fire, water, earth, and sky. What they came up with was amazing. Everything from Dinning With Angels, to Mother Earths Enchanted Forest. Unfortunately I was in China (you are all feeling really sorry for me right now aren't you :o) walking the Great Wall or challenging the Terra Cotta Soldiers, so I missed it. This year I am all game!

So this summer, June 30th to be exact, the Event Elements Competition will be held at the oh so fun JW Marriott in Scottsdale. The design elements are retro, contemporary, vintage and traditional. And for the icing on the cake (no pun intended) the ever so loved Scott Corridan will be a guest judge. No pressure or anything right? So if you want to come out and see the amazing tables and cakes, visit the JW Monday the 30th of June, between 3:00 and 6:00. After the public viewing there will be awards given to the top three competitors in each element category. So it should be fun. I know my back already hurts from...well, I guess you will just have to see what I have been up to. Let me just say, you are going to LOVE what Jen THYE did this year. See you there!

My Current Obsession

So I think I am going to make this a regular blog item. I get obsessed really easily, and it kind of controls my life (in some ways ;o). I am sure some of you can relate. Well, for those of you who didn't follow my other blog, I am a complete American Idol fanatic. I love to sing! And I would like to think that people enjoy listening to me sing. But right now I am obsessed with American Idol's sister show, So You Think You Can Dance. Just like singing I love to dance. But I am awful. Terrible. No good. Just plain sad really. In fact, one of the sole reasons my husband and I had a brunch wedding is so we didn't have to put ourselves through dancing in front of others. But it is quite a comical night at the Thye household following an episode of So You Think You Can Dance. We try everything, salsa; tango; contemporary (which Josh thinks he is really good at, hehe) and my personal favorite, crunk (is that even how you spell it?) And you have to love Mia Michaels. That girl's choreography just leaves me speechless. All of the choreographers are fabulous really!! So, my TIVO and I are friends as long as it records this latest obsession of mine. Check it out. Dancing will just make you smile!

Meeting Scott Corridan

So a couple of weeks ago Phoenix Bride and Groom Magazine held its annual networking event at Los Cedros. Not only was it a blast getting to see Los Cedros (an upscale horse property) decked out for an event, but I got to meet one of the most inspirational men in the wedding planning industry, Scott Corridan. He was so down to Earth that he was more interested in playing with the horses than sleeping in and enjoying his hotel while we set up the workshop and beautiful event.

Laura and Kyle- the perfect pair!

I just loved this couple! But everyone did. They were fun, hip, and so happy in love I just had to smile every time I was around them. With such a wonderful sense of style and very articulate vision for her day, Laura was an absolute gem! 2008 Wedding Trends- part two!

Here we go again...

6. Color, color, and more color! Especially since we are going into spring, do not be afriad to use color, and bright colors! Monochromatic themes are really fun when you are usuing bright colors like cobalt, fuschsia or apple green. But mixing colors, patterns and fun little favors make for a really interactive and vibrant wedding reception! Guests will appreciate the break from cream and ivory and relish in the super chci hues of the season. What ever season that may be, it can always use some color!

7. Frozen yougurt versus cake. Yep, you heard me right. Frozen yougurt is going head to head this season with the all time favorite wedding cake as the choice dessert. Now that we as a nation are all on a diet kick (or at least want to be, crave to be, dream to be...) we can get excited about frozen yougurt. Plus, what's really fun is that chefs all over the nation are making the most incredible yogurt. And with flavors like double dutch chocolate, french vanilla, peaches and cream, and grasshopper you won't even know it's low cal. Top it off with a fresh made, candy fluer de lise with your monogram shining through, and you have a really cute, very original, and so much more memorable dessert! Any one else getting hungry???

8. Local food movement. I love this one. Especially for out of town guest bags or party favors. Local food is something that not only expresses who you are as a couple, but can tell a story of your day. And with so many products hailing specific locations, why send your guests home with a Hershey's bar with your name on the wrapper or serve just any 'ol meal? Look into local products that people can't get anywhere else. Or serve a meal that is native to where you are getting married. Even if it is not fancy, do it for the rehearsal dinner or day after brunch. Trying local food is part of the fun when you travel some where. Everywhere has a history and a story, just like you and your fiance. Get creative and make your wedding something really memorable!

9. Poloroid guest book. Pretty much anything retro is cool now a days. Cabbage Patch Dolls, Rubik's Cube, even leggings. (Crazy, right?) What else is cool is poloroid film and cameras. The old time square image with white border, and extra large note area on bottom, makes for a fun and creative guest book. This also makes a great replacement of the ever so popular signature frame (still popular, FYI). But the poloroids allow for your guests to take a picture of themself at your wedding, usually displaying a little bit of thier personality, and leave you a message of congratualtions. It is two fold! And much more enjoyable to look back on in twenty years. Maybe even comical... At least we hope so!

10. Lighting. Use lighting strategically. Plain and simple. Lighting makes for great ambience. It adds flavor into a rather flavorless rooms. It brings in intimacy and warmth, not to mention the fun factor. Lighting just makes it better. It transforms a room. Doing weddings in the same location makes this even that much more clear to me as a planner. But since you only have one wedding to plan, take my word forit. Lighting will make your party just that much better. You will not regret it in the end. I promise!

2008 Wedding Trends- part one

As we are now two weeks into our new year, the questions is posed. What are the new trends for 2008? Most of you already know that I have a rather different perspective on trends (like "it is your wedding, do what you want" sort of mentality), but never-the-less I will indulge you in what I see as the new (and still slightly old) trends for 2008 weddings. In no particular order, here we go:

1. Eco friendly weddings. With the "green" movement still very much upon us. It is important to think about our world on a daily basis. Those of you who want to make an even bigger stand, make a statement with their wedding. Everything from organic food, to recycled invitations, to fair trade fabrics used in your wedding dress, Eco friendly weddings might cost you more financially, but will ultimately do their part in trying to protect our planet. If you are up for it, go green brides!

2. Graphic prints. This trend started to make it's mark in 2007 and will continue to do so in 2008. With graphic prints becoming more mainstream, more people are starting to fall in love with the idea of them. Black and white prints especially will remain popular in 2008. But don't count out those crazy brights that you never thought would resurface post 1970 and 80. With some small modifications, they are still hip, and oh so fun!!

3. Alternative cakes. I hear this all the time "...but we really don't like cake". Then why do you still want one at your wedding? I know they are traditional, and people like desert. But does it have to be vanilla cake, with questionable fondant frosting that pleases the masses. No way! Try something a little less traditional, and a little more you. If you love Italian food, pair it with tiramasu or a gelato bar. If you are doing down home cooking, serve a couple different cobblers. French food? Serve mini pastries or crepes. What ever your food choice ends up being, be creative with your dessert. People will still be happy, and I think, pleasantly surprised!

4. Lace a beads, please! After a couple of years of simple (plain Jane) dresses, 2007 brought in some pretty fun trends in bridal gowns. 2008 will keep the lace and bead trend going. Thank goodness. Girls want to look like girls on their wedding day; and what better way to look and feel girly, than to have some lace or bead work on your gown. Nothing says girl like lace. I mean, really. And if you do not like lace, treat yourself to some hand beading of crystals or pearls. If you do want a simple gown, make it pop in the back. It's a focal point during the ceremony and a nice surprise to people who are admiring the way you look! What ever your style, make the trends work for you.

5. Letterpress invitations. I am a big fan of this one! Letterpress is not only classy, but it is so much fun! As a history buff, I love the fact that all print used to be done through letter press. And if you are a tactical person, letterpress can be a way of telling your story while presenting simple, beautiful, and unique invitations and stationary. Letter pressed papers can be funky, chic, elegant, you name it. But if you are going to do simple, letterpress really is simplicity at its best. Just can't say enough...

Josh's 1/2 Ironman

Well, he finally did it. After breaking his knee in four places, my husband decided he would some day accomplish a 1/2 Ironman. Since it came to Phoenix, his desire grew even more. I am proud to say that this October, he did it. He finished his triathlon, and it only took him seven hours. (I personally can think of a lot of things that I would rather do for seven hours, but that is not the point...)

So a big (actually HUGE) part of my job is to educate brides and grooms when they are making decision regarding their wedding. One of my mottos for life is "It is all about choices". (If you think about it, it really applies to everything!!!) And believe me, bad choices make for bad memories. And no body wants those! So if you want to avoid Bridezilla-dom and you who are not my current (or future- sad for you :o) client list, I have decided to start an advice section of my blog. Check it out every now and then. Learn from me, and make better choices! Enjoy your good decisions and enjoy your day! My philosophy is, if it helps you, I don't mind sharing. Also, ask questions!!
